State Legislation
MFP policy efforts at the state level have focused primarily on ensuring
state financial support for our signature healthcare program, the Fishing
Partnership Health Plan. However, the MFP has developed commercial fishing
consensus regarding development of ocean management legislation. The purpose
of this legislative effort has been to establish a regulatory framework
for the protection of fisheries and fishing activities from non-fishing
development projects, especially the increasing number of renewable energy
projects proposed in ocean waters. The version passed in 2007 by the Massachusetts
Senate (SENATE, NO. 2346 AN ACT RELATIVE TO OCEANS) provides a real voice
for commercial fishermen in the decision-making process regarding ocean
development projects as well as secures commercial fishermen with an institutional
role in establishing ocean research priorities for the Commonwealth.
