Legislation & Policy
Times have never been harder for fishermen. Stocks are lagging
due to a host of reasons that include water pollution, large infrastructure
projects like wind farms and LNG terminals, and undersea mining. Some of
these issues are new territory and do not have tested regulatory processes in
place. The result is a quagmire of agency and stakeholder debates and power
struggles in which the commercial fishermen are trying to steer a course that
will enable them to continue their fishing way of life. Representing all gear
sectors and many ports in Massachusetts, the MFP is uniquely positioned to
assist and promote the commercial fishing sector. The task of meeting the
disparate needs of each sector and endorsing the industry as a whole is
challenging, yet the following policy position statements and testimonies
demonstrate the MFP’s unmatched ability to do so.
