March, 2005Fishermen’s Partnership to Honor State Senator Therese
Murray
The Massachusetts Fishermen’s Partnership (MFP) is very pleased to honor
State Senator Therese Murray at its 2005 Annual Meeting. Fishermen from
across the state will assist in the presentation of the recognition award
during a brunch reception on Saturday, April 2, at the Radisson Hotel
Plymouth Harbor at 180 Water Street in Plymouth, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00
p.m.

Senator Murray will be presented with MFP’s highest honor, The Wheelhouse
Award, for extraordinary achievements to safeguard fishing families. MFP
executive director, David Bergeron, said, “Senator Murray is a leader in
advancing fishing community interests at both the local and statewide levels.
She listens, she takes action, and she succeeds. And all fishing families are
more secure as a result.” Fishing Partnership Health Plan president, JJ
Bartlett, said, “If it were not for Senator Murray and like-minded
legislators, fishing families would not have access to the high quality
affordable healthcare coverage they enjoy today.”
Senator Murray has worked to protect commercial
fishermen across the state from the economic losses of regulations and
unnecessary hazards that regulations sometimes impose. As chair of the
powerful Senate Ways & Means Committee, Senator Murray led the fight in the
Massachusetts Senate to restore full funding to the Fishing Partnership
Health Plan. Senator Murray is also instrumental in enacting on-the-ground
changes such as securing funding for floats for the new boat ramp in
Plymouth. She also closely monitored right whale issues that had potentially
significant impacts on the local fishing fleet.
The Massachusetts Fishermen's Partnership (MFP) is an umbrella organization
of 16 commercial fishing associations representing all gear and geographic
sectors of the Massachusetts fishing industry. The organization was created
to promote the common interests and economic viability of commercial
fishermen and fishing families. The MFP is sponsor of the Fishing Partnership
Health Plan, which provides comprehensive healthcare coverage for more than
2000 members in the fishing community.
